SPECIALTY PROGRAMS
SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT #1
SSD #1 is administered by Special School District (SSD), which is part of the Louisiana Department of Education. SSD is governed by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) and is under the supervision of the State Superintendent of Education.
The school program operates year-round, with a 260-day instructional program for inpatient and day treatment students. All teachers are certified in both regular and special education. The program is a joint venture between the Department of Health and Hospitals and the Department of Education to provide on-site education for Grades K-12 and is fully approved by the Department of Education.
When a youngster is admitted to one of the hospital youth programs the school determines class placement, based on information from a variety of sources. Every effort is made to assure appropriate educational programming. From the time of admission, the school is an integral part of a client’s treatment plan. School and clinical personnel work in teams to address the individual needs of each client.
